Seasonal Face Oils

Posted on September 30 2015

Our in-store Autumn Beauty Review was enlightening. Annee de Mamiel, acupuncturist, aromatherapist, and founder of de Mamiel Skincare, taught us how principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine can be used during our beauty routine to improve circulation and cleanse the lymphatic system.

She also taught us surprising things about the need to change our face oil with the seasons.

Because skin is the first to feel the changes of moisture levels in the air (and the turning on of central heating), Annee reminds us that we need to address our skin’s hydration needs before dehydration settles in. Understanding the densities of oils will help you choose the right one for the time of year.

Oils can be fatty, dry, or somewhere in between. They also have varying levels of omega fatty acids and nutrients:

Fatty Oils -
e.g. coconut, macadamia, castor, olive, sweet almond, apricot and peach kernel
rich in saturated or monounsaturated fatty acids

Half-Fatty to Half-Dry Oils -
e.g. jojoba, argan, avocado, rice bran, sesame, and prickly pear
rich in both monounsaturated (omega 7&9) and duounsaturated fatty acids (omega 6)

Dry to Very Dry Oils -
e.g. borage, rosehip, camelina, and evening primrose
rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega 3) and GLA (omega 6)

Fattier oils tend to be thicker and have higher viscosity, meaning they’re slower to absorb into our skin. Warming up oils in your hands first and then massaging onto skin will increase absorption.

Luxury natural beauty oils blend these oils to maximize nutrients while still providing the right levels of hydration.

Here are our 4 picks that will help your skin weather the transition into fall beautifully:

de Mamiel Autumn Facial Oil, $114
Crafted intentionally to balance environmental factors, phyto-nutrients, and hydration needs, the de Mamiel Autumn Oil uses argan, rosehip, prickly pear, and evening primrose oils to decongest, smooth, and calm post-summer skin. It also includes the best age-defying plant-based ingredients to help skin renew and deal with changes in air moisture as the temperature cools.

L A Christine No 3 Berry Face Oil Treatment, $78
A combination of sweet almond and apricot oils provides a base for L A Christine’s all-star ingredient, Lingonberry Oil, a Finnish beauty secret that is one of the highest antioxidants in the world. This oil smooths skin while nourishing it with anti-aging vitamins and anti-inflammatory fatty acids.

Vered Therapeutic Balancing Face Oil, $68
Formulated with potent healing botanicals (the same used by the founder to heal her body internally), the Vered Therapeutic Balancing Oil combines almond and jojoba oils to help skin retain and absorb the organic essential oils included to balance the widest spectrum of skin irritations.

Juara Radiance Vitality Oil, $65
Recently awarded the much coveted “Face Oil of the Year” title by SHAPE Magazine, the Juara Radiance Vitality Oil blends 12 natural oils and botanical extracts, including jojoba, macadamia, coconut, and rice bran, to produce a non-greasy beauty oil that boosts skin’s regenerative process to address signs of aging.
