How to Layer Winter Skincare

How to Layer Winter Skincare

by Jen Larson and Emily Byrne

It’s the most wonderful time…of the year. Unless you ask your skin. Colder temps, windchill and dry indoor air sneaks up on all of us and leaves skin asking “where’s my healthy glow?”. Don’t fret. It’s there – it’s just watching Netflix and hibernating. Let’s unearth it, protect it and layer it up for the long haul. All you need is a stepped-up-a-bit routine and you’ll be good to glow. Your best winter skin…right this way.

In-house esthetician and clean beauty expert, Emily Byrne, gave us the down low on how and what products are best for winter skincare.

STEP 1: CLEANSE

“Start your regimen off with a hydrating and nutrient-rich step. Now is not the time to strip your barrier! This oil cleanser from Ao has red algae which contains antioxidants that help protect your skin." More cleansers perfect for winter: Pai Light Work Rosehip Cleansing Oil, Osea Ocean Milk Cleanser

STEP 2: MASK

“Masks are great to incorporate into your routine 1-3x a week to revive dull, tired skin. This one from 27 Rosiers is a go-to for a gorgeous, overall glow thanks to ashwagandha, calendula and chamomile.” More masks perfect for winter: Josh Rosebrook Advanced Hydration Mask, Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Mask

STEP 3: SERUM

“You’ll want something soothing and nourishing for winter months as your skin could be sensitized by wind, harsh temps and indoor heating. This face elixir from LE PAAR has a powerful combination of frankincense, myrrh and 24 karat gold to do the trick." More serums perfect for winter: Marie Veronique Soothing B3, Josh Rosebrook Hydration Boost Concentrate

STEP 4: MOISTURIZER

“This one from Alpyn Beauty has it all. Wild actives, essential vitamins and fatty acids help nourish skin. Ceramides and squalane help fortify the moisture barrier; vitamin C helps brighten and support skin against environmental stressors and retinol works to reduce the appearance of fine lines." More moisturizers perfect for winter: Therapi Rose Otto Cream Propolis + Ultra Radiance Cream — this cream is incredibly nourishing and hydrating, plus it contains organic propolis and honey which has an antibacterial benefit, Indie Lee Superfruit Facial Cream

NIGHT: EXFOLIATE

"You want to make sure you’re sloughing away dry skin, which will allow your moisturizer to penetrate even deeper. This serum has plant based acids to gently exfoliate and improve skin’s texture, and hyaluronic acid to help hydrate and soothe." More exfoliators perfect for winter: Indie Lee Radiance Renewal Peel Pads, Goop Exfoliating Instant Facial

BONUS

Add these must-haves to your winter routine: "Dr. Rogers Healing Balm is amazing for chapped lips and skin, and is great to take with you when you travel. Another travel favorite are Spacemasks. These are self-heating, jasmine-infused eye masks. Olverum Bath Oil is an aromatic blend of ten essential oils including Siberian Fir oil—it smells like a wintery/cozy dream and helps hydrate skin. Finally, during cold/flu season we're all washing our already dry hands a LOT! Be sure to replenish that moisture with a good hand treatment. For this I love Neal's Yard Remedies Hand Serum."
