Doing right by people and the planet sometimes costs more. We make that tradeoff on purpose. Most businesses are designed to maximize efficiency and profit above all else. At Credo Beauty, we’ve chosen a different standard: beauty that raises the bar for what “good” looks like in business. That means making decisions that prioritize long-term impact over short-term gains. This is just one of the ways we are defining Clean Beauty. Here’s what that looks like in practice:
- We banned single-use items in 2021. Face masks, wipes, and sample sachets are common in beauty, and they can drive sales, but they’re also designed to be used once and discarded. We chose not to carry them in our boutiques and avoid contributing these items to beauty’s packaging crisis. These products aren’t inherently bad, but the format itself depends on disposability. We didn’t see that as necessary for delivering results to customers. Since making this change, we’ve diverted over 3,000 lbs of hard-to-recycle waste from landfills. It also pushed innovation forward: our partner brand True Botanicals developed biodegradable eye patches that deliver the same benefits with significantly less waste.
- We’re conscious of carbon when we ship our products. For example, air shipping is the fastest, often cheapest way to get inventory on our shelves. But it’s also one of the most carbon-intensive choices in retail. We believe the side effects of carbon emissions are not worth the speed, so we choose to avoid it . We adjust our operations timeliness to allow for the longer wait. Like many of the other behind-the-scenes choices we make, our customers may never know the difference when they shop with us, but we do.
- We helped build Pact Collective for everyone, not just us. As co-founders of Pact Collective, a non-profit aiming to reduce beauty packaging waste, we could have kept Pact drop-off bins exclusive to our boutiques to drive foot traffic. Instead, we helped distribute thousands of bins industry-wide, even to our competitors, because what's right for the planet outweighs what's right for our P&L. Since 2021, Pact Collective has diverted 1.2 million pounds of hard-to-recycle empties nationwide.
Doing good business isn't always an easy path. But it's the right one. This Earth Month we're celebrating the 130+ brand partners helping us make it the industry standard. We’re also celebrating you. Because it’s your support of Credo Beauty that makes all our efforts possible.
