When we started Credo Beauty in 2014 we set out to change an underregulated beauty industry to push brands to do better by people and our planet with The Credo Clean Standard™.
Ten years later, what have we accomplished?
our journey
Credo, meaning 'I believe,' reflects our core philosophy where actions speak louder than words; in 10 years we've created meaningful change through continuous action:

2014
Credo Beauty is founded in San Francisco by Shashi Batra and Annie Jackson.
They introduced the concept of ‘clean beauty,’ driving a movement committed to offering effective and safer products for people and the planet.

2015
Credo Beauty opens its first Flagship store in San Francisco's Pacific Heights on Fillmore Street.

2017
The Credo Clean Standard™ is introduced.
We expanded beyond our Dirty List™ and became a bellwether in the industry for how to do beauty, better. Further from the Dirty List™, our brand partners now adhere to our standard, manufacturing product with industry best practices, testing, verifying, and ensuring marketing claims are honest and transparent.

2019
Fragrance Transparency Policy is published. All brands are required to categorize the source of fragrance ingredients.
There is no industry regulation to require fragrance ingredients to be disclosed to the consumer. So, when you read a personal care label, you just see the word “fragrance” or “parfum”. We’re working hard to change this.

2020
Supports the landmark Toxic-Free Cosmetics Acts
in California, Washington, and Oregon, which bans harmful chemicals like PFAS, formaldehyde, and mercury in beauty products. Annie Jackson (Co-Founder) and Christina Ross (Head of Science and Policy) testified in front of lawmakers.

2020
Sustainable Packaging Guidelines introduced
to eliminate the use of single-use items and reduce the use of virgin plastic and non-recyclable materials. Our packaging guidelines targeted the elimination of single-use plastics and promotes recyclable, reusable, or compostable materials. Our efforts have led to significant milestones, such as the elimination of single-use beauty products and the reduction of virgin plastic use in packaging.

2021
Wins Fast Company’s Most Innovative Company Award
for creating Exa Beauty, Eleven by Venus Williams, and our Sustainable Packaging Guidelines.

2021
Credo Beauty co-founds Pact Collective, a non-profit dedicated to diverting beauty product packaging waste from landfills.

2023

to push for increased innovation for sunscreen active ingredients in the United States

2024

2025
Wins two Fast Company Awards, including Exceptional Teamwork and Most Innovative Company for our NewMatter™ pump.

We're working closely with our brands on the Sustainable Packaging updates, and focusing on our Climate Goals.
Credo for Change is an annual accelerator workshop that aims to empower historically underrepresented individuals in the beauty industry.
We actively support sustainability through responsible sourcing, minimizing waste, and supporting efforts to protect ecosystems, ensuring that the beauty industry contributes to a healthier world for future generations. In 2021, we co-founded Pact Collective, the first-ever beauty industry-wide packaging recycling program, to take responsibility for hard-to-recycle empties that curbside programs won’t accept.

We offer products that meet the highest standards of safety, efficacy, and sustainability.
By focusing on clean ingredients and rigorous testing, we work hard to ensure that every product is not only effective but also safer for both you and the environment.
Learn MoreDid you know that some beauty ingredients are linked to human health or environmental risks?
We believe that’s unacceptable. In partnership with ChemForward, we’re increasing ingredient transparency and promoting safer alternatives. With ChemForward’s data repository and verified SAFERTM program, we help our brands avoid harmful chemicals and choose safer options. We’re also leading the way as a founding member of the Know Better, Do Better initiative to address gaps in ingredient hazard data, working towards ensuring that all beauty ingredients are thoroughly evaluated for safety.

We actively participate in advocacy efforts to influence state and federal cosmetics regulations. We’ve testified in many legislative settings to push for stricter safety standards in the beauty industry including testifying on Capitol Hill in 2024 to push for increased innovation for sunscreen active ingredients in the US. We also supported the landmark Toxic-Free Cosmetics Acts in California, Washington, and Oregon, which ban harmful chemicals like PFAS, formaldehyde, and mercury in beauty products.
