Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) and how is it different from other recycled plastics?
Post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic refers to plastic that has previously been used and discarded by consumers, and is now recycled into new products. Packaging or items containing PCR plastic have a reduced environmental impact compared to those made from 100% virgin plastic (or new plastic). This is because using PCR plastic avoids the ecological impacts of sourcing and manufacturing new plastic (for example energy consumption and carbon emissions). -
Are there cosmetic or skincare brands actively using post-consumer recycled plastic in their packaging?
Yes, and at Credo Beauty, we’re doing the work to accelerate adoption in the beauty industry. In fact, all the brands we work with that use plastic now have to make sure their packaging design contains at least 50% PCR plastic. We also actively encourage brands to use other sustainable material and packaging options, such as recyclable paper packaging and refillable product options. -
How can consumers identify products made from post-consumer recycled plastic?
Leading brands communicate the presence of PCR plastic via a clear statement mentioning the presence and percentage of PCR plastic. You’ll find this either on the beauty product packaging or product webpage. You may also find the PCR percentage displayed inside, below, or beside a recycling triangle symbol. To make things simpler, simply shop our PCR recycling champions collection. -
What are the environmental benefits of using post-consumer recycled plastic?
The beauty and wellness industry generates over 120 billion packages each year. Unfortunately, most of this constitutes single use packaging, which is landfilled, incinerated, littered, or ending up in the ocean. Recycling plastic helps reduce the plastic waste that ends up in the environment. It also helps reduce the impact of making new plastic products. That’s why at Credo Beauty, we co-founded PACT, a nonprofit collective driving towards systemic change to reduce beauty packaging waste. We want to lead the way to tackle plastic packaging waste and reduce the industry's overall carbon footprint.
