Frequently Asked Questions

What is organic skincare?
Organic skincare contains ingredients that have been grown in line with strict organic farming standards. These organic ingredients are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) - making them kinder on the environment and on the skin. That said, not all “organic” products contain 100% organic ingredients. That’s why, at Credo Beauty, we vet every skincare product against our strict Credo Clean Standard™ to ensure they’re truly “clean”. -
What makes a skincare product certified organic?
Organic skincare must meet strict standards set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the USDA Organic program. Under this program, skincare that is made with 95–100% certified organic plant-based materials can carry the USDA Organic seal. The state of California also has its own law (the California Organic Products Act), which states that a product “sold as organic” must contain at least 70% certified organic ingredients. If a skincare product doesn’t meet this criteria, manufacturers can still point out which ingredients used are organic. -
Which certifications should I look for in organic skincare?
Here are the main certifications to look out for: - USDA Organic - common in the U.S. and highly regulated - Ecocert and COSMOS - well-recognized worldwide and strict on sustainability But here’s the thing: a seal is just the start. At Credo Beauty, we vet the full ingredient list because a product can be certified and still not meet our strict Credo Clean Standard™. -
Are organic skincare products better for sensitive skin?
Looking for the best organic skincare products for sensitive skin? What matters is the formula. Organic ingredients tend to be kinder and better suited to those with sensitive skin. That said, always check the full ingredient list for a product, as not all the ingredients an “organic” skincare product contains may be organic. Shopping with us at Credo Beauty is always a safer bet for sensitive skin, as we ban over 2700 harmful ingredients that are potentially irritating to skin, as well as harmful to human health and/or the environment. We still always recommend to patch test new products to account for personal sensitivities. -
Is organic skincare more effective than non-organic?
Organic skincare brands such as KORA Organics, One Love Organics and OSEA tap into powerful plant actives (for example green tea for antioxidants, calendula for calming, seaweed for minerals) that can absolutely deliver results without the extra fillers or harsh additives. Not only that, but they can help in the longer term by looking after your skin’s general health (as opposed to traditional skincare products, which can contain harsh, potentially harmful ingredients). -
Does organic mean chemical-free?
No - everything, even water, is made of chemicals. In skincare, “organic” refers to how ingredients are grown and processed, not their chemical makeup. Organic vegan skincare, for example, is still full of active compounds - just derived from plants grown without synthetic pesticides.
