Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are clean moisturizers?
Unfortunately, there is no legal definition of what a 'clean moisturizer' should be, so it’s actually up to each individual brand to determine what they consider clean. At Credo Beauty, we want to bring you the best in clean beauty standards, so we prohibit over 2700 ingredients that have a negative effect on either human health or the environment. As we also push for a higher level of transparency across the industry, you can trust that our range of clean moisturizers are made with safer and sustainable ingredients.
  • How do clean moisturizers differ from conventional moisturizers?
Credo Beauty’s moisturizers are free from known irritants and potentially harmful ingredients such as petrolatum, dimethicone, and parabens, as highlighted in our Dirty List. Conventional moisturizers may contain such ingredients, which are linked to potential negative health effects. While we allow both natural and synthetic fragrances (as some synthetic fragrances are less harmful to the environment and have great safety profiles), we prohibit phthalates, nitromusks, or polycyclic musks.
  • How is clean moisturizer different from natural or organic?
Natural moisturizers are made using only naturally derived ingredients, while organic moisturizers are created with natural ingredients that have been organically grown and need to adhere to strict guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's USDA Organic program. Some clean face moisturizers we offer use organic ingredients or are fully certified as organic final products. And while there is no legal definition of what a clean moisturizer is, the products we stock adhere to our industry-leading vetting in The Credo Clean Standard™.
  • Are clean moisturizers better for sensitive skin?
Individual sensitivities to ingredients can vary. At Credo Beauty, we are pushing for increased levels of transparency in the industry and have policies in place such as our radical Fragrance Transparency Policy. This can help you make more informed decisions and have full clarity on what products to choose for your own skin care needs. You’ll find that clean moisturizers are generally a better moisturizer choice for sensitive skin as they contain fewer irritants such as fragrances, sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. They’re designed for all skin types but are made from ingredients that are gentle and nourishing for the skin, making them a perfect option for those with skin that gets easily irritated.
  • What are the top brands for clean moisturizers?
As we ban over 2700 ingredients that have been linked to negative human health or environmental effects, we only work with top brands that are committed to the highest standards when it comes to offering clean products. If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed with all of the wonderful clean beauty brands we have available, why not start by checking out some of our bestsellers? You’ll find clean skin moisturizers from brands such as Ursa Major, Follain, and Maya Chia, all of which are brands that are well known for their carefully chosen, responsibly-sourced, high-quality, clean ingredients, and ethical practices.
  • What ingredients are commonly avoided in clean moisturisers?
At Credo Beauty, we don’t allow parabens, phthalates, PEGs, synthetic fragrance, or certain silicones, to name a few. In fact, the list goes on, as we ban or restrict over 2,700 potentially harmful ingredients. You’ll see safer alternatives that keep your moisturizer both effective and gentle on your skin (and the planet).
  • Can I use a clean moisturiser under makeup or SPF?
Absolutely. In fact, most clean moisturizers are designed to play nicely with the rest of your routine. A lightweight gel or lotion can give you a smooth, hydrated base under sunscreen or foundation. Richer creams can work well too - just give them a minute to sink in before layering makeup.
  • Are your clean moisturizers vegan or cruelty-free?
Every moisturizer at Credo is cruelty-free. Many are also vegan, and we make that clear on the product page. If you want to avoid animal-derived ingredients like beeswax, lanolin, or milk proteins, just look for the “vegan” tag while shopping.
  • Can I use a clean moisturizer if I have eczema or rosacea?
Yes, but always with care. Many clean moisturizers are formulated with soothing, barrier-strengthening ingredients like colloidal oatmeal, ceramides, or calendula, which can feel calming on sensitive skin. That said, eczema and rosacea are complex conditions, so patch test first and check with your dermatologist if you’re unsure.
  • Do clean moisturisers provide long-lasting hydration?
They can - especially if you choose a formula that matches your skin type. For example, humectants like hyaluronic acid pull water into the skin, while emollients like shea butter lock it in. Many clean moisturizers combine both, so you get hydration that lasts through the day (or night).
  • What’s the difference between clean moisturisers and natural moisturisers?
“Natural” usually means the formula relies on plant-based or mineral ingredients. The term “Clean” doesn’t carry a clear legal definition. That’s why we created our industry-leading vetting Credo Clean Standard™.
