Frequently Asked Questions

  • How are clean exfoliants different from natural and organic exfoliants?
Organic exfoliants meet USDA Organic standards, while natural exfoliants use naturally derived ingredients without regulation. Clean exfoliants follow The Credo Clean Standard™, banning over 2,700 harmful ingredients and promoting transparency.
  • Are clean exfoliators suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, clean exfoliators use gentle natural ingredients like rice powder and fruit enzymes, which remove dead skin without causing irritation, making them ideal for sensitive skin.
  • Can clean exfoliants improve skin health?
Yes, clean exfoliants brighten and even out skin tone while promoting cell renewal. They often include hydrating ingredients to support the skin’s moisture barrier.
  • Are clean exfoliators better for the environment?
Yes, clean exfoliants avoid microbeads and harsh chemicals, using biodegradable alternatives and sustainable packaging to minimize environmental impact.
  • Can clean exfoliants be used on all skin types?
Yes, we offer clean exfoliants for every skin type, with gentle options for sensitive skin and salicylic acid-based formulas for acne-prone skin.
  • How can I exfoliate my body naturally?
You’ve got options. For a hands-on approach, a body brush or exfoliating brush can help boost circulation and slough off dead skin. If you prefer products, our clean body scrubs use natural exfoliants like sugar, salt, coffee, or finely milled rice powder.
  • What is a clean exfoliator?
There’s no set legal definition for what makes an exfoliator “clean”. That said, a clean exfoliator is typically one that skips harsh microbeads and harsh ingredients. At Credo Beauty, we created The Credo Clean Standard™ to ensure we only carry products that avoid the 27,000+ ingredients on our Dirty List. So here, you’ll find exfoliators with biodegradable exfoliants (like jojoba beads, fruit enzymes, or lactic acid) paired with nourishing oils and botanicals. They smooth the skin without stripping your barrier, so you get glow without the after-burn.
  • How often should I exfoliate my skin?
It depends on your skin type. Most people do well exfoliating 2–3 times a week. If your skin is sensitive, once a week may be enough. Over-exfoliating can actually damage your barrier, leaving you red or flaky, so it’s better to start slow and let your skin guide you.
  • Can I use a clean exfoliator if I have acne-prone skin?
Yes - and it can actually be really helpful. Look for chemical exfoliators with salicylic acid or gentle fruit acids like lactic acid. Avoid harsh physical scrubs with large grains, since they can aggravate inflammation. And of course always follow with a light moisturizer to keep your barrier strong.
  • Should I exfoliate in the morning or evening?
Either works, but many people prefer evening so the skin can renew overnight. Plus, exfoliating makes skin more sensitive to the sun, so if you do it in the morning, don’t skip SPF.
  • How do I choose the right clean exfoliator for my skin type?
Dry or dull skin → Try a creamy scrub with nourishing oils and fine exfoliants. Oily or acne-prone → A BHA-based formula (like salicylic acid) can help unclog pores. Sensitive → Stick with very mild enzymes (like papaya) and avoid anything gritty. Combination → Alternate between a gentle physical exfoliator and a mild acid-based one. If you’re unsure, start with the mildest option and build up as your skin tolerates it.
