There is no legal definition for clean mascaras. However, our Credo Clean Standard™ bans over 2700 ingredients that have been linked to negative effects on the skin or on the planet. Natural mascaras also don't have a set definition but typically use plant-based or naturally derived ingredients, while organic mascaras meet the strict standards established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture via the USDA Organic program.

Regular mascaras are often packed with performance-enhancing ingredients, which can help make lashes longer but at a cost as they might contain irritants like coal tar dyes or synthetic fibers. Clean mascaras, on the other hand, ditch those harsh chemicals for gentler alternatives like mineral pigments and plant-based waxes, which can help with eye sensitivity, as well as reduced smudging. Although they have a different approach to synthetics, clean mascaras can be as effective and results-driven for volume and length. Most volumizing mascaras are synthetic and use lengthening fibers and volumizing polymers for dramatic results, which can be harsh on the eyes and irritate. Some formulas even use film-forming plant sugars for a water-repelling effect. While these might not be as heavy-duty waterproof as synthetics, they offer a more natural, smudge-resistant alternative for everyday wear or light rain. Remember, clean mascaras may require reapplication after intense water exposure.
